A liquid roof system is only as strong as what lies beneath it. Many DIY projects and low-cost shops make the mistake of applying coatings directly over an aging or compromised membrane.
As you can see in the photo, applying a new coating over a failing roof often creates a "greenhouse effect." The new layer traps heat and moisture, which can chemically break down the original glue bond between your rubber/TPO membrane and the wooden decking. This results in unsightly bubbling and total adhesion failure.
